Understanding Gambling Related Harm and its links to Crime

Introduction

‘Understanding Gambling Related Harm and its links to crime’ is a course that has been developed by lived experience, using real life accounts along with recognised research and data. It serves to raise awareness of what Gambling Related Harm is and how that can lead to crime. Our aim is to deliver this session to people working within the Criminal Justice System to gain a better understanding of Gambling Related Harm and to take these learnings in to their day-to-day working environment. We believe in lived experience making a difference and helping others LEARN from those experiences. This is one of GamLEARN’s core aims.

Our continuing professional development (CPD) course on Gambling Related Harm has been developed with Gambling Harm UK and has had lived experience members of GamLEARN help shape and design this session. We know more can be done, and with this training, we hope to provide people working within the system with a better understanding of Gambling Harm.

Evaluations

Since the launch of our CJS course in October 2023, we have been collating feedback from professionals working within the criminal justice system and supportive services to ascertain the course’s impact. This evaluation will help guide GamLEARN in improving the course, understanding how we can help those who attend, and shaping further training and support for the future.

Course Feedback

We really value your individual/collective feedback, as it improves the services we offer. We aim to always get better and improve upon what we do. That is why providing opportunities to learn, connect and develop together, is vitally important.

GamLEARN is one collective voice, and your thoughts truly matter.

The course has everything in terms of pitching the learning. I recommend that this needs to be right in the middle of the table for involvement at all levels of our HMPPS structure.

A policy change to align gambling harms with other established addictions is the next step.

I am far more aware of how to approach people who suffer with gambling addiction and know the support networks available.

I really enjoyed having the visual of the presentation but also having the booklet with the slides in and a space to make notes. I also really enjoyed the shared lived experiences both in video format and also experiences shared from the facilitators.

I will also consider how my role as health and justice partnership coordinator can improve things for people on probation or those within the service who may be worried about gambling.

I liked that it was interactive and questions were allowed throughout. The PowerPoint was very informative and had varied context.

I feel confident in my understanding but also the process as well as the guidance to better help support an individual.

I am grateful to be given the opportunity to go on this course, because not only did I learn about gambling/gambling addiction, but also the seriousness of it – the vicious circle people can get into, the consequence on family and friends, and the risks of losing everything (including life).

I will take forward the learning and use it to work with strategic partners to ensure gambling is addressed more in CJS.

The explanations of how the brain is changed to create addiction was fascinating and gives real insight into how gambling can affect anyone. The lived experience stories are impactful and to understand the impact we can have at PSR stage is invaluable.

This was the best training I have had. The facilitators were fantastic and interactive. Their lived experience was invaluable and really made the training stand out. The videos and statistics were really interesting.

The lived experience is very interesting, I think it’s important to hear from people who have experienced the issue themselves. Videos were great to watch – person touch to the topic and not just purely stats and data.

There are limited services within our local area for gambling support and thanks to the training we have more services available that are available to help people.
